What I will probably actually do:
I recently received a copy of this book:
If you can’t see, it’s called Girls Who Choose G-d: Stories of Courageous Women from the Bible by McArthur Krishna and Bethany Brady Spalding with (beautiful) illustrations by Kathleen Peterson.
This is a picture book that details the many inspiring women from the scriptures. Each woman is profiled alongside gorgeous artwork depicting her story. Each woman’s choice to follow G-d is presented and followed up with a question that allows each reader to relate their own story to that of the biblical heroine.
As someone who hopes to one day raise children to follow G-d, this book is such a blessing. These women from the scriptures- who so often do not get nearly enough props for their courage and faith- are portrayed in a simple, yet beautiful and inspiring way.
The book is written and illustrated by Mormon women, but it features women from the Old and New Testaments, so it is really for people of all Christian denominations.
The stories are laid out simply, so they are easy for young children to understand and appreciate. They are also free of embellishments or hidden agendas, which is truly refreshing and something I really appreciate. The stories are presented just as they are in the scriptures, just in a very approachable way.
Each story is presented first with the choice the woman had to make
and then presents what the woman did, along with a question to help relate the story to the reader’s own life, which teaches likening the scriptures to ourselves in a beautiful way for children.
As I write this review, I keep wanting to say “I want to read this with my daughters one day” but that is not correct. I want to read this with my children. All people can and should benefit from learning about these amazing women! Just as women and girls benefit from learning about the tremendous men of the scriptures (as we spend a very disproportionate amount of time doing!) men and boys too can be blessed by reading about the inspiring women of the scriptures. I am so glad that McArthur Krishna and Bethany Brady Spalding and Kathleen Peterson have payed such homage to these women of faith in this beautiful book. I have loved reading it and I look forward to reading it with my future children.
I honestly believe every family would be blessed by this book. I am so grateful to have it and I highly recommend it!
Girls Who Choose G-d: Stories of Courageous Women from the Bible will be available on August 25, and is currently available for pre-order at Deseret Book and Amazon. The hope is that if this book does well, they will be able to create a follow up for women of the Book of Mormon, so please spread the word!
